MORE PEOPLE HAVE CLIMBED THE ATLANTIC THAN HAVE ROWED ACROSS THE ATLANTIC OCEAN

ABOUT US

We are the Noarsmen. Two ordinary teachers with an extraordinary vision. A question that we get asked a lot is why we want to row an ocean? The simple answer – Adventure.

As teachers, this is our chance to inspire the students that we teach and to show them that humans are capable of amazing thins. We want these children to know that even when things get tough, there is triumph and joy at the end of your journey, as long as you keep a focused mind, keep dreaming big and strive for greatness.

Another question that we tend to get asked, which usually follows the first question – Are you ocean rowers? The simple answer – No. Are you mad? – Yes. Do you plan on making the unimaginable possible by rowing across the Atlantic? – You bet!

THE CAUSE

As So why YoungMinds? No on predicted the pandemic that would ravage our way of life and subsequently out mental health. We have seen first hand the impact lockdowns and isolation from friends has had on children and their mental health. YoungMinds will be leading the charge to support our children, giving them a voice, whilst we battle through the aftermath of these difficult times. YoungMinds is helping to brighten the light.

Simon Floyer

Why TWAC?

About 7 years ago, Simon started obsessing about rowing this race. Putting himself completely out of his comfort zone and achieving something remarkable is the ultimate aim. At 15 he was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, lost close to a third of his body weight, and was told that he wouldn’t be able to follow a normal way of life. The next 25 years have been about proving the doctors wrong and so here he is, signed up to the world toughest rowing race. The secondary aim has developed out of his career after seeing the impact the pandemic has had on children and teens mental health. It has wreaked havoc and has led to him deciding to commit to raising money for an amazing charity.

Sander Palmqvist

Why TWAC?

Rowing this race is a recent objective of Sander’s after having been persuaded by Simon. Sander grew up having a fear of open water however, a determination to face his fears, push his body and mind beyond his limits, and maintain a passion for wellbeing, sports and exercise, have always been defining traits of Sander’s character. As a teacher, Sander has witnessed first-hand the impact that the pandemic has had. In particular, it’s effect on children and young adults’ mental health. Therefore, when given the opportunity to raise money for YoungMinds, a charity which aids others in recovering from the pandemic, what once seemed like a tough decision to make, became a very easy one. Sander is looking forward to challenging himself and sharing this experience with his own students and anyone else watching. He wants to show how anything is possible given the right mindset, attitude and dedication.
